Action taken for Prevention and Early Detection of Disabilities :

A Prevention and early detection centre has been opened in the Non Government sector. The Spastic Society of Karnataka with the Co-ordination of St. John Medical College and Hospital, Bangalore is doing genetic counseling. Genetic Counseling Masters' Training programme was organized for the District Disabled Welfare Officers of the state with the co-ordination of Foundation for the Prevention of Disability at Spastic Society of Karnataka Bangalore. The Health and Family Welfare Department has taken up prevention measures. The Dept. of Welfare of Disabled & Senior Citizens has conducted a survey of persons with disabilities in all the taluka’s in Karnataka through the village rehabilitation workers and multipurpose rehabilitation workers under the State NPRPD scheme. Under SSA awareness campaigns are held regarding prevention of disabilities. A total budget of Rs. 85.32 lakhs has been earmarked for this purpose by the Education Department. Also prevention of disability through creating Public Awareness and Training of Doctors, and immunization programmes are undertaken. A prevention and early detection centre has been opened in the Non Government sector. Genetic counseling is being done by the Spastic Society of Karnataka with the Co-ordination of St. John Medical College and Hospital, Bangalore. Prevention programme is also under taken at the Vanivilas Hospital at Bangalore.

The Dept. of Health & Family Welfare Services has screened 93.32. lakhs children. Doctors of Primary Health Centres are being trained in the field of Rehabilitation and early intervention under the programme of Rehabilitation Council of India.

The Govt. of Karnataka has undertaken a massive awareness campaign to create awareness regarding the rights of disabled persons and also prevention, early detection and rehabilitation of disabilities involving the NGOs and media for creating public awareness. The print media (pamphlets, brochures, wall posters etc.), electronic media, jingle etc., T.V spots & clippings etc., awareness campaign in villages is being conducted. Apart from this the media is being sensitized to create massive public awareness.

The Women and Child Development Dept. in co-ordination with Health Dept. has taken up this work on a massive scale under the ICDS programme. The VRWs and MRWs of the Department for the Empowerment of Differently Abled & Senior Citizens are conducting public awareness also. The Education Department is preparing a module for E.C.C.E features to include prenatal and postnatal care for both mother and child.

Sarva Shikshna Abhiyana has a special component for disability. SSA is educating public through schools, PHC village level workers and Anganawadi Workers. Under CBR programme also publics are educated in this regard. The VRWs and MRWs of the Department for the Empowerment of Differently Abled & Senior Citizens are conducting public awareness also.

The State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities has attended many phone in programmes on TV/Radio and conducted Press meets to disseminate information on prevention and early identification of Disability.
